5. "Comes when called - from 10 ft in house"
RECALL (aka coming when called) TRAINING TIPS
When calling our pups to come, we may need to place them in a safe spot. If too many recalls result in "containment or restraint," pups can develop negative associations. Teach your young pup that a gentle collar grab is a happy activity.
Check out the video for a demonstration:
-
Begin by softly touching your dog's collar.
-
Then, reward them with something they enjoy, such as a delicious treat.
-
Finally, let them go, say, "go play" and give them back their freedom!
Repeat the exercise. As demonstrated in the video, the pup starts to look at me as if to say “will you grab my collar and give me a treat again?” Once I’ve seen that I can incorporate “Come!”
Puppy
6. "Go to place - stay for 15 seconds"
• Give the cue for puppy to go to their “place” (or “bed”, “crate”, etc.). Starting with the puppy at the your side, give the cue (verbal, hand signal or both) and the puppy must go to its “place” 10 ft. away.
• The puppy must lie down in its “place.”
• When 15 seconds has passed, you may go to the puppy to release it.

PLACE TRAINING TIPS
See video for demo. This is a great behavior to back-chain train! This means we start the last part of the behavior. Begin with "down" at their place and gradually add distance.

Puppy
7. "House-trained - owner attests, describes training"
• What was/is your system for house-training?
HOUSE TRAINING TIPS

Puppy
8. "Demonstrates relationship - Plays indoors - w/ family member/owner"

• Choose at least 1 activity for play: a stuffed animal, ball, simple trick, preferred game, etc.

Excited to see what relationship activities students come up with!

Puppy
9. "Out for a walk - outside on leash (straight line - 20 ft)"
• Walk at least 20 ft. and stop, then walk another 20 ft. For the second 20 ft., you may choose to do an about turn and return to the starting point.
• The puppy does not have to sit when the you stop.
• The puppy should be walked on a regular leash (not a retractable leash)and wearing a buckle collar, martingale, or body harness. Heel position is not required.
• The puppy should not be pulling on the leash. You may use food to encourage walking on a loose lead.
LEASH WALKING TRAINING TIPS
See video for demo. Try the 1-2-3 treat game!
Puppy
10. "Exercise outside - w/ family member/owner
